The Zero Waste Project

The amount of household, commercial and industrial waste continues to grow due to population growth, new means of production as well as consumption and food habits.

Recycling our waste, which is clearly important, also has a significant environmental impact because it requires a number of resources for its collection and processing (water, electricity, transport, etc.). Reducing waste at source is therefore a priority.

What is Zero Waste?

Zero waste is a strategy whose aim is to reduce the impact that humans have on the environment. To achieve this goal, we must reduce the amount of waste produced and reduce the waste of natural resources.

Zero waste is a progressive approach towards conscious consumption. It allows us to make healthier choices and to consume better quality products; it also helps us make substantial savings.

Getting involved in the Zero Waste approach to living means taking action on a daily basis: The best form of waste is the one that we do not produce!

The Zero Waste project of the City of Brussels

In its 2018-2024 majority mandate, the City of Brussels made a commitment to undertake a large-scale environmental project. The aim is to encourage everyone to drastically reduce their level of waste, whether household waste or waste produced by shops and events.

The objective is to elevate the city of Brussels to a “Zero waste pioneer city”.

To achieve its environmental targets, the City has set up several projects which should ultimately aim to reduce, reuse or recycle waste.

The administration is therefore directing its efforts and its policy towards dematerialisation and consumer control, in particular by raising awareness among citizens, traders and local stakeholders.
